One of the most adventurous vocalists to arrive on the jazz scene for years, Dorothy Murphy has performed extensively since early 1990's. Her initial groups have included Louis Stewart, Mike Nielson and Ritchie Buckley focusing on the 'American Songbook'. A rewarding five years with Hugh Buckley in duo and larger groups placed her at the forefront of Irish vocal jazz. Dorothy's musical personality is not limited to a jazz influence solely, there is a wide range of expression which borrows from traditional, classical and Indian music. She is an improviser and listens as the ideas unfold: There is, more and more often, a sense that the music is channeled rather than devised.
As a composer she is an innovative original voice. She received the 2006 recording award from the prestigious Music Network. In September 2007 her long awaited debut album 'Calling’ was released on IMC label. This is a collection of nine songs, mostly her own compositions.
She has also recorded with the Danish composer Jens Winter on The 'Four Elements'. She has had considerable radio and television exposure and was invited perform live for Lyric FM with her ensemble Circleways [2007]
