To all the music fans around my age, late twenties, who were too young to experience the rave scene first hand but fell in love with the sounds anyway. 20-04-09: Bottlenote at The Fold II "A surprising music whose kaleidoscopic colours, textures and original lines constantly confounded expectation." The Irish Times Morla is the most recent group to emerge from Bottlenote - a collective of creative Dublin based musicians. Simon Jermyn's sculptural guitar work blends beautifully with Seán Óg's personal approach to jazz's most iconic of instruments while Shane O'Donovan's creative percussion and innovative electronica have been a mainstay of Dublin's underground scene for a number of years. Focusing on a pared back tonal palette, reminiscent of ancient folksong traditions and coupled with quarter tone melodies, Morla has a personal approach and sound which is all its own. Expect daring compositions, live processing and an insistence on meaningful improvisation. Rainfear is a new improvised music project co-ordinated by David Donohoe. It is a vehicle for both layered self improvisation and collaboration. Currently it comprises David Donohoe (Keys/ Electronics) and Peter Maybury (Drums/ Electronics). Developing a very personal voice on saxophone and bass clarinet as well as invented instruments and electronics he has plotted his own path along the fault lines between free improvisation, avant-garde composition and contemporary jazz. Although highly active with a number of projects including Trihornophone, Morla, Kaum Quartet, Bottlenote and a raft of interdisciplinary work, solo saxophone remains at the core of Seán's work. This performance sees him teasing apart his own compositions and creating new music drawing on a bank of extended techniques, in-the-moment musicality and impassioned improvisation. 10-03-09: Trot A Mouse on tour Loren Stillman (Saxophone) "Guitarist Simon Jermyn is definitely one of the stars of the future. His recent projects have revealed a subtle, restless musical mind, and the strength and sense of purpose to lead innovative bands." - Cormac Larkin, The Sunday Tribune Trot A Mouse is the debut release and lead project from Dublin-based electric bassist/guitarist/composer Simon Jermyn. 2007 saw the band release the eponymous debut on the prestigious Fresh Sound New Talent label - the imprint that launched Brad Mehldau and The Bad Plus. The release signals the emergence of a major contemporary jazz talent. Jermyn's music is world where influences collide: folky melodies, grooves in changing meters, soundscapes and some unexpected changes in direction. Trot A Mouse is also a remarkable band featuring Jermyn, the fast-emerging New York saxophone star Loren Stillman who has recently released the acclaimed Blind Date (Pirouet), the prodigious Sean Carpio and Danish clarinettist Joachim Badenhorst. Simon Jermyn has played guitar and bass since a young age. He performs equally as an electric bassist and guitarist. His work very often also makes use of effects and electronics to sample and manipulate in real time, aswell as incorporating field recordings. He has performed and recorded with musicians including Chris Speed, Loren Stillman, Hilmar Jensson and Ronan Guilfoyle. Alto saxophonist Loren Stillman has an amazingly creative head on his shoulders: he makes music that is so absorbingly different as evidenced on his latest release, Blind Date (Pirouet). He has played with Charlie Haden, Dave Liebman, and John Abercrombie. He names Lee Konitz and Wayne Shorter as musical influences, but along with them he also counts Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and the master of many styles, Frank Zappa. Sean Carpio is widely regarded as Ireland's finest drummer and one of our most unique talents. With his collective groups acclaimed White Rocket and Red Rocket (which also features Jermyn) he has built a reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting talents to emerge from these shores. The group is completed by frequent Han Bennink and Hilmar Jensson collaborator, Joachim Badenhorst clarinet. Wednesday 11th March, Thursday 12th March, www.simonjermyn.com

29-11-08: Kaum Quartett Irish Debut 05-12-08 Kaum Quartett - St. Audeon's, Dublin 8 - Friday 5th December €15 Booking - 01 670 3885 Hayden Chisholm Four very distinctive international voices of the same instrument coalesce in the Kaum Quartett, in a new project that seems eminently suited to this most atmospheric of Dublin venues. The 12th Century German mystic Hildegard von Bingen is the catalyst for this impressive gathering of alto saxophonists, convened by adventurous Dubliner Seán Óg. Christian Weidner is an emerging force in Berlin’s creative music scene, the soulful New Zealander Chayden Chisolm brilliantly uses microtones and in Frank Gratkowski, the quartet has one of Europe’s most exhilarating free spirits. Working with overtones, just intonation and open structures, Kaum Quartett weigh up stately plates of sound detailed with highly coloured and virtuosic improvisations, using Hildegard's beautiful monophonic chants for further investigations into an evolving lexicon for the saxophone.
