Eomac is the alias of Ian McDonnell, a Dublin based musician, composer and DJ. A familiar face on the Irish musical landscape he has been involved in a number of different projects and collectives over the last few years (Lakker, Bottlenote, Spatial Music Collective, Irish Composers Collective). This diversity has been refelcted in his musical output - from contemporary classical chamber pieces to raging gabba - but this recent project sees a return to beat driven electronic dance music.

31st | Morla
JJ Smyth's, Aungier Street, Dublin 2 | 8.30 pm €10 | www.improvisedmusic.ie
For The Irish Times, Morla were the hit of this year’s 12 Points! Festival, where they were praised for “surprising music whose kaleidoscopic colours, textures and original lines constantly confounded expectation.”This creative duo compromises two of the bolder spirits in Irish jazz today, and its also a product of Bottlenote, the Dublin collective that mirrors the emergence of similar coalitions of young musicians throughout Europe. Guitarist Simon Jermyn has just released a debut cd for Barcelona's Fresh Sounds imprint, and his beautifully textured manipulations of the guitar soundworld are a talking point in the Irish jazz scene. Similarly, alto saxophonist Sean Óg has foregone the instrument's linear approach, opting for microtonality, electronica and DIY instruments to forge a personal vocabulary. Catch them before they head off to Italy’s Forigno Festival, and introduce yourself to up and coming Korean born pianist So-Young Yoon with new project Yoi-Tang, which augments her regular trio with guests, saxophonist Cathal Roche and vocalist Lauren Kinsella.

2009 is a big year for Togetherness, a stellar quartet whose players will be familiar to anyone with a keen eye on the Dublin jazz scene, and currently riding high on critical acclaim for their eponymous debut CD released by the Living Room Project. Setting aside the Hammond B3 and returning to the piano has stimulated some exemplary small group writing from Justin Carroll, characterized by shifts in meter, and performed by musicians who clearly enjoy unpicking his rhythmic knots. Tenor saxophonist Michael Buckley now seems to have few impediments to melodic expression every time he plays, word is definitely out in the global jazz community about drummer Sean Carpio, and Simon Jermyn is evolving a brilliantly innovative and very personal concept of the electric bass.

The 12th Century German mystic Hildegard von Bingen is the catalyst for this impressive gathering of alto saxophonists, four very distinctive international voices of the same instrument coalesce in the Kaum Quartett, in a new project that seems eminently suited to this most atmospheric of Dublin venues. Working with overtones, just intonation and open structures, Kaum Quartet weigh up stately plates of sound detailed with highly coloured and virtuosic improvisations, using Hildegard's beautiful monophonic chants for further investigations into an evolving lexicon for the saxophone.
